HOW DO WE CAPTURE EVP?
The first rule of thumb when attempting to capture EVP is
communication. One must remember that spirits are people. Speak to them as you
would a new acquaintance, or an old friend. Let them know your name and ask them
theirs. Explain to them what you are doing, and the fact that you have set up a
recorder in order to hear their reply. Leaving your recorder in another room,
and not interacting will almost always yield a poor result. We also recommend
explaining to them that we mean no harm, nor disrespect.
We recommend using a mini cassette recorder with an external microphone.
EVP can be captured with any ordinary tape recorder. However, a mini cassette is
easier to handle during an investigation, light weight and pocket sized. An
external microphone is best because it can be extended away from the unit, so as
not to pick up the sounds of the recorders motor running at the time of taping.
We also do not recommend walking around with the recorder in your hand, as not
to pick up our movement on the recording. In the event you, or anyone in your
group coughs or makes a noise, always comment this out loud, as not to confuse
normal sound with EVP. This includes airplanes overhead, dogs barking in the
background ETC. Another method that we have found most effective is hooking the microphone
on a tall wide mouth glass during taping. This not only amplifies the EVP, but
also gives you a better perspective as to how far away the person is that is
interacting with you. Remember to always have an open mind, respect for the
deceased, the proptery you are investigating, and others in your group. Once you have captured your first EVP
we guarantee, you will be hooked!
